About Us
Who is IGTPN?
The Indigenous General Practice Trainee Network (IGPTN) is a national, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisation dedicated to empowering, supporting and advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander General Practice (GP) and Rural Generalist (RG) trainees across Australia. IGPTN exists to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors are connected, supported to thrive, and equipped to lead within a culturally strong and responsive primary healthcare system.
IGPTN’s vision is a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander General Practitioners and Rural Generalists lead equitable healthcare, strengthen cultural safety in clinical practice, and inspire healthy communities across Australia. Central to this vision is self-determination – enabling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors to shape their own training journeys, professional identities and leadership pathways.
Our work is grounded in strong values. We prioritise connection, fostering relationships between trainees, Fellows, communities and Country. We act with integrity, upholding transparency, respect and accountability in all our partnerships and decision-making. We demonstrate determination, supporting lifelong learning, professional confidence and resilience to overcome systemic and individual challenges. Above all, we embed cultural safety and responsiveness, centring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems, cultures and holistic approaches in everything we do.
IGPTN delivers its purpose through four strategic pillars. Through Membership, we grow and engage a diverse national network of GP and RG trainees, Fellows, medical students and prevocational doctors. We provide tailored support, track outcomes through robust data systems, and deliver targeted programs to support members to progress through training and achieve Fellowship. Our Education programs include culturally strong workshops, mentoring, exam preparation, study groups and resources, delivered by a diverse and experienced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical education team and continuously refined to meet member needs.
Through Leadership and Advocacy, IGPTN strengthens the profile and influence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP and RG trainees, leads Indigenous-led research, and works with governments, colleges and partners to grow the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP/RG workforce. We also support members beyond Fellowship, nurturing future leaders in General Practice and Rural Medicine. Underpinning all of this is strong Governance and Management, embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and doing, maintaining high standards of accountability, building organisational capacity, and demonstrating measurable impact.
Together, IGPTN is growing a culturally strong GP and RG workforce that delivers equitable healthcare and inspires future generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors.
