New School Program to Inspire Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People to Consider Careers as GPs/RGs

Mar 23, 2026

IGPTN is proud to announce the launch of ‘GPs and RGs and Me!’, an exciting new school program developed in partnership with Malpa, designed to inspire Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people (and their Malpas) aged 9-11 to explore careers as General Practitioners (GPs) and Rural Generalists (RGs).

The program features two engaging, hands-on lessons delivered by Malpa in primary schools across Australia. Students watch short videos featuring real Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GPs/RGs from Cairns, Palm Island, St George, and Albury, then participate in interactive activities that bring the experience to life.

“This is about planting a seed early,” says Dr Josie Guyer, IGPTN Chair. “When young people see doctors who look like them, who come from communities like theirs, it changes what they believe is possible.”

The program emphasises that there are many pathways to becoming a doctor – not just one. Featured doctors share their diverse journeys, including those who started as Aboriginal Health Workers, nurses, or in other health roles before entering medical school.

One of the program’s key messages is the importance of support. “Having someone who believed in them and supported them made all the difference to the doctors in our videos,” Josie explains. “We want parents and families to know: you can make a huge difference by believing in your child and encouraging their curiosity.”

The program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Schools interested in bringing Young Doctors for Life to their classrooms can contact Malpa at www.malpa.org.au.
